silence...words didn't match
t was around 4 am. the dogs were cowering in the corner and my roommate was not anywhere in the house. i flipped on the television and received two pieces of information: war had struck the american mainland, and it was our own attacking.
walked outside, the dogs wouldn't follow. i heard the first moans and new immediately it was time...finally.
my truck had been set for any type of survival for years. with food and weapons, i loaded the dogs and started out from my home...took dirt road after dirt road....saw two of the undead, dispatched them. we are currently sitting north by northeast outside of wolf creek. the ski area has been deserted for a while. the next town is south fork....
survivors can contact me via cb.
food and supplies are set for now, would like to start moving on.
come to wolf creek ski resort, i am barracaded in the ski rental area.
DAY 2 Wolf CREEK
wonder if i should recount things a little better. i wonder if i should tell you that the first zed i killed was a young child. it moaned, and clawed and scrabbled at my truck window. i swung upon the door, ramming it back....i...yeah, i...let it come up on me, it grasped my leg, tried to bite..it tried so hard, i gave it a chance, i did. one strong swing from the tire iron, its blood swelled out of the skull like a small spring. it fell to the ground. it twitched, squirmed. i could see bulbous pieces of its brain between the scalp and tissue. it reminded me a bit of intestines trying to escape a gutted animal. the second zed was its mother. she had a tit hanging out of her ripped shirt, and her throat looked something like out of a werewolf movie. strips of flesh hung down in patterns of three. the blood was crusting around her whole chest. she lunged for me..i didn't give her the same chance as the child.
her corpse lay next to her offspring.
i call him little willy.
little willy's mom.
may the rest in better peace than i found them.
this proves god is dead
this proves man's power is dead
we killed ourselves.
i am going to go do inventory on my supplies.
the dogs are going to go out for a bit with me...i can't bear losing them, but they need to stretch their legs.
my cb tag is X.
contact me.
DAY 3
first zed encounter since little willy and his mom.
she was ambling up the road, looked totally normal....
i was moving non perishables to the roof of the ski rental area. there is some shelter up there, and i figured if the going gets tough....then i could hold out up there. found 3 cases each of corn, peas and green beans. 2 cases of dehydrated mashed potatoes. 2 industrial sized tuna cans....the list reads like a bad day at a cafeteria. the dogs don't have any food...as far as pet food. they will be better off on meat and veggies anyway. I will have to leave behind some of my better beliefs and try for an elk or deer or something today. i won't let them starve...and they aren't big on mashed potatoes.
Anyway, I spotted her several hundred yards off.
She didn't move like the undead. She was making her way up the hill and would stop and look around every few steps...as if she was looking for someone or something. i climbed down the hatch ladder into the rental shop area. The dogs were asleep in the corner, I went passed them quietly. Luckily they didn't wake up. By the time i had removed the piping i had used to secure the doors, she was no more than 100 feet from the store. I noticed that she was smiling and i thought the hand gesture was a wave. I walked up to her, asking how she was and had she heard me broadcast on the cb. She flipped her head from side to side, like she had been doing since i saw her. Blood was trickling down out of her left ear. Her mouth ripped into a perfect little grin. She didn't run after me, or put up her arms, or even moan. She just kept up her steady walk. Step, step, step.......shake of her head. That is when i noticed the half pencil sticking out of her ear.
A split second thought....had someone tried to dispatch her that way?
Step, step, step....shake. Smack, crack......down she went.
I leaned over her and looked into those dead eyes. Bloodshot, and pale blue. I rolled her over and checked for any thing in her pockets. There was a small note.
Elizabeth,
I don't know what is going on, but I am leaving without you.
Johnny.
It was written in pencil.
I grabbed Elizabeths dirty feet and dragged her body a few hundred yards back down the hill. Went back to the base, grabbed some charcoal fluid and a lighter. Walked slowly back down to where she lay and dumped fluid over her until she reaked of more than just shit. I bent over, clicked the lighter and her clothes ignited immediately. I watched her body burn. The acrid stench and smoke of burning flesh coalesced into the air and over the trees. The skin melted back, exposing the fat and sinew to the fire. It popped and gurgled.
Ashes to ashes.........
I wonder if that pencil made for a semi brain-dead zombie. Was that why she didn't attack?
P.s. Elizabeth, Johnny was an asshole.
Days gone by........
The days are getting hotter. The inside of our home is absolutely oppressive...so I thought we could spend the night on the roof. I hoisted the girls up. We settled in. The stars were on fire. Every constellation i remembered as a child, were so vivid and perfect. The breeze filtered through the aspens and pines. Whispering sweet night stories, telling of things nicer than i could remember. The dogs curled up next to me and we went to sleep. I cannot say what time it was when Lacy started growling and Bella howled. They didn't whimper or cower..but the noises i was hearing brought on full alert. Crunching and shuffling and snapping twigs. I stayed stock still only momentarily, reached over and grabbed the maglite.
I belly crawled to the edge of the roof, the dogs followed me. I shined the light into the woods. There was a herd of elk.
There were three bulls in total. One was the obvious elder, and the other two were probably no more than a year old. There was at least 11 cows. They were somehow a sign to me that not everything had gone to hell yet. They foraged for a long while. The dogs curled up next to me and put their heads over the edge of the roof and watched the elk. I turned out the flashlight and let my eyes adjust. The moon was about three quarters full, so it did not take long. We all three fell asleep that way. The next morning I awakened to voices.
I looked off the roof and saw three trucks. They seemed loaded down....I figured it was supplies.
I noticed my dogs weren't with me.
I scurried down the hatch as fast as i could and grabbed a machete and a baseball bat. I did not know what to expect, but my dogs....were not with me.
I pulled down the barricade faster than i had even on the day i saw Elizabeth.
I ran out into the sunlight and saw them.
Two men were trying to catch my dogs.
"We can train em to sniff out those rotting bastards."
He made a swoop for Lacy with his left hand and she countered. She bit hard. He countered back with a swift kick. She yelped so loud and tried to run off the other direction.
I started running as hard and as fast as I could to her, they noticed me.
"HOLY SHIT"
I hit him hard across the back with the baseball bat, he went down, his hand was pulsing blood.
The other guy jumped at me...I put the machete straight through his chest.
Then gun fire.
I felt a sting across my right shoulder. It didn't really affect me, I was so blinded with protecting what i love so dearly.
The woman by the truck, she was the one firing. She stopped and looked at me and I at her.
"Jesus, you are alive."
"yeah...."
She put the gun down and walked to were her friends lay.
She put the gun to the first guys head and blew him away. Then the second one in the same fashion.
"I am sorry."
I didn't really look at her, i knelt down next to Lacy and she licked my hand. She let me check her, I could not find anything broken. I lifted her in my arms and started to walk back to the rental shop. The woman, she followed as did Bella. Once inside I got Lacy some water and some childrens aspirin I had found behind the counter. She took both without argument. The woman knelt down beside us.
"We didnt know, those guys didnt know there was anyone with them."
I looked at her.
"Did any of you look around...NOTICE..that maybe someone was here."
She bowed her head down and wrapped her arms around her knees.
"With things the way they are, none of us even thought...........I am sorry."
She walked off into the corner and layed down.
Through tears she said, "They were assholes anyway."
I barricaded the door again and went and layed next to Lacy. Bella followed suit. My insides felt sick. I think I cried, but i don't know for sure. Sleep came quickly.
Continued...
I awoke. There were bandages over my shoulder. I could tell by the pain levels that nothing much had happened. Lacy was standing over me licking my face and Bella was pawing at me. It was time for them to go out. They still won't go to the restroom indoors unless they are left to it for a very long time...more than over night. I rolled over and saw that the barricade to the front doors was down. I jumped up and walked out the door, dogs in tow.
She was unloading one of the three trucks. She has black hair cut in an old school style...bangs short, the rest long. She had on blue jeans and a black tshirt, black cross trainers. She let out a yell of fustration and yanked harder on one of the boxes. It fell to the ground, and collapsed open. I approached her silently as possible. She was still an unknown quantity. Was she injured, had she been bit? She knelt down and started putting the contents of the box back in.
I was ten or so feet from her...
"Hey"
She looked up and covered her eyes from the sun.
"Hi"
She went back to repacking the box. I looked at the contents on the ground and realized they were personel possessions. The woman had saved her stuff some how and was not going to let it go easy.
"We can move that stuff into the rental area."
She stopped what she was doing momentarily and shot me a look.
"I will just keep moving on."
"Where?"
She threw a small trinket at me and kept packing.
I scuffed the ground with my left foot for a moment. Willing the rocks to move left, but of course, no.
"Do you know anything about what caused this?"
She stopped what she was doing and sat on the ground.
"As far as anyone knows it was the contagions in the serrano, jalepeno peppers, the contaminated beef from krogers and the tomatos. It looks almost purposeful. How would all these things carry contagions if not on purpose. The U.S. has supposed regulations, am I correct?"
The rock finally moved left. I stopped messing with them and sat down.
I remember the first reports, though I never watch the news, my mom had called me and told me not to eat the tomatoes. Then it was e. coli infested meats from krogers and then the peppers.....jalapeno, serrano, bell peppers, you name it. I heard some say that it was traced back to Mexico, then I was told it was Texas. I grew up in Texas.
I was born in a small town called Alpine. I grew up 80 miles to the east of there in a town called Sanderson. I was raised on a sheep ranch. They had to constantly vaccinate the animals.......but that didn't always work. Remember the "mad cow" outbreaks in England? They said things couldn't jump species, but I know that to be untrue. When I was about 11 years old my step mother Phyllis contracted soar mouth on a cut on her ring finger. It was from letting a doggie lamb suck her finger, something we all did. It was helpful in getting them to take the bottle. Since then I have been increasingly more interested in epidemic, pandemics, well, disease of any kind. I remember people saying foot and mouth disease also couldn't jump ship, but it could.
Back to Phyllis. She finally went to the doctor after the sores on her finger started running red lines up her arm. Blood poisoning. The doctor told her she had in fact contracted sore mouth and had to have the finger amputated before the infection spread further. That was the same week i got stuck in a corner for two hours after saying the word "crap". My parents weren't just real brilliant all the time. They thought the punishments the languished out on me would make me stop saying words like "crap" and the shortened term "b.s". They were mostly wrong.
Two years later, after witholding sex from my father....believe me, he deserved it, she left. In that time, i remember the sheep coming down with several diseases, all of which they treated by vaccination. In that time as welll, we found the first antibiotic i was allergic to. I had recieved a wasp sting on the side of my head. As things were, most f us were alos allergic to bee and wasp stings.. I remember laying on my grandfathers couch, my head swellling and my breathing becoming irregular. He fnially dictated taht he couldn't help me and since i was sent to the closest hospital......60 miless away. They adminstered all the regulars....also penicillin in case of infection.
I bring this up, duelly noting that the human culture as a whole has over administered anti biotics for over 50 years. We have been plunging ourselves into a world were germs specific and non have become more and more immune to our defenses. Now the vegetables are even sick. What the hell?
Before i get going on a long memory lane, let me jump back to where we are now.
